Drive to Add Sexual Identity Civil Rights Protection in Michigan Begins

An effort is underway to add sexual identity to the protections offered under Michigan’s civil rights laws.

A group called the Fair and Equal Michigan committee has filed petition language with the state Board of Canvassers.

If the language is approved, supporters would have until May 27th to collect 340,047 signatures to place the proposal on the November, 2020 ballot.

The legislature could also step in and approve the measure, which would forestall a statewide vote. The Republican-led legislature has been reluctant to address this issue in the past, even though former Republican Governor Rick Snyder supported it.

Michigan’s Elliott Larsen Civil Rights Act currently offers protection based on religion, race, skin color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status, and marital status.
