Health Insurance Marketplace Enrollment Period Begins

Enrollment in Michigan’s Health Insurance Marketplace opens today.

State figures show about 750,000 residents will need to enroll in a plan before the enrollment period closes at the end of January.

The state Department of Insurance and Financial Services says all counties in the Lower Peninsula will have at least three carriers offering plans.

In the Upper Peninsula, there will be two companies in each county, except in Schoolcraft County where there is only one.

Administrators say the tax penalty for being uninsured is about $700 per person, or 2.5% of your yearly income, whichever is higher.

Fines for families are even greater.
