House Appropriations Bill Signals Support for the Soo Locks

The following press release was issued by Congressman Bergman’s office:

Washington – Congressman Jack Bergman issued the following statement after the House Appropriations Committee introduced legislation that includes $75.3 million for construction of a new Lock in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan:

“This funding is a monumental next step for the construction of a new Soo Lock. The $75.3 million meets the request of President Trump and would continue the progress made over the past two years to build the new Lock. This signals to the entire House of Representatives just how important the Soo Locks project is not only for Michigan’s First District but also our entire nation,” said Bergman.

Earlier this year, Congressman Bergman led a letter with 31 of his colleagues to the House Appropriations Committee urging for the President’s $75.3 million budget request to be included in the FY20 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill.

The House Appropriations Committee is expected to consider this legislation as early as next week; if  approved by the Committee, it could then move to the full House of Representatives for a floor vote.
