Late Deal Certified Wayne County Election Results

Wayne County has finally certified its November election results.

A deal struck last night between state Republicans and Democrats ended the stalemate that had threatened to send the fate of Michigan’s presidential electors down an uncharted path.

The impasse began when the two Republicans on the Wayne County Board of Canvassers refused to certify the results. The two Democrats voted in favor of certification.

With no majority, the results would have been passed to the State Board of Canvassers.

Following the initial vote, President Donald Trump tweeted that the result was “a beautiful thing.” Some of his supporters had hoped that the certification failure would eventually enable the Republican-led state legislature to appoint its own slate of electors that would favor the president. Key state GOP leaders had already said they would not do that.

But, after an outcry by election workers in Wayne County, the board voted again.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson received the news as she was discussing the situation with Chris Cuomo live on CNN…

“While we were talking, the Wayne County Board of Canvassers actually reversed their past decision, and voted 4-0 to certify the full results, including the City of Detroit, for Wayne County.”

The two Republicans accepted a deal in which they voted to certify the result, with a request that Benson conduct an audit of the vote tallies…

“We’re certainly going to look into that. I mean, look, we want everything to be valid, we want everything to be clear, and we want voters to have confidence in the process.”

The audit would not affect the vote total.

All of Michigan’s counties have now certified their results. The State Board of Canvassers is scheduled to meet Monday to certify the statewide totals.
