Lawmakers Look To Resolve UIA Fraud Accusations

House Democratic Leader Sam Singh and Senate Democratic Leader Jim Ananich will hold a press conference at 12:30pm to outline legislative initiatives to fix the state’s Unemployment Insurance Agency and reimburse working families that were falsely accused of fraud by the UIA.

The agency leveled 50,000 accusations of fraud against 40,000 Michiganders in recent years, but so far, 93 percent of those cases have proven to be false.

The agency also compromised the personal information of nearly 2 million Michiganders.

Michigan lawmakers are planning more oversight hearings to investigate how thousands of people receiving unemployment benefits were wrongly accused of fraud.

A bipartisan workgroup is also being assembled.

Republican House Oversight Committee Chairman Joseph Graves made the announcements Monday, a day before Democrats will unveil proposed fixes.
