Mackinac Bridge’s 59th Anniversary

Happy birthday to the Mackinac Bridge which opened to traffic 59 years ago today.

No big plans for this birthday, but Mackinac Bridge Authority executive secretary Bob Sweeney says they’re commissioning a special poster for the bridge at 60.

The Mackinac Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere.

The biggest event on the bridge is the annual Labor Day Bridge Walk.

Sweeney says next year, crews will be removing lead paint from the towers as part of a $7 million project.
