Marine Pilot Rates Going Up

Great Lakes ports, vessel operating companies and maritime trade associations are fighting the U.S. Coast Guard’s increase of marine pilot rates on the Great Lakes.

A proposed increase by the Coast Guard for the 2017 shipping season is 14-percent.

That’s on top of double-digit percentage increases the previous two years.

Steve Fisher, executive director of The Great Lakes Ports Association, is concerned the planned increases could discourage freight traffic on cargo ships in the Great Lakes.
