Michigan Schools Below Average on National Tests

Scores by fourth and eighth graders on a national test were about the same in Michigan this year as they were the last time the test was administered two years ago.

Michigan’s standing in relation to other states rose slightly, because the performance by some other states fell.

The National Association of Educational Progress tests still place Michigan well into the bottom half of states.

Fourth graders scored 32nd in reading, and 42nd in math. Eighth graders scored 28th in reading and 28th in math.

A report released early this year by Michigan State University ranked Michigan last in the nation in revenue growth for school spending. Adjusted for inflation, school funding has fallen by 15 percent since the mid-90s.
