Milliken Remembered at Memorial Service

Dignitaries from both sides of the political spectrum turned out yesterday to pay tribute to Michigan’s longest-serving governor.

William Milliken died last fall at age 97.

His family had planned to hold the memorial tribute early this summer, but it was put off because of COVID-19 concerns. It was also moved to the spacious open-air Kresge Auditorium at the Interlochen Arts Academy.

Bill Rustem started working for Milliken 50 years ago as an intern, and later became an advisor…

“He was kind, and he was tolerant, and he was always genteel. He had a strong sense of what was right and what was wrong, and no one questioned his character.”

Governor Gretchen Whitmer praised the way in which the Republican Milliken worked civilly with Democratic-led legislatures…

“During his 1972 State of the State Address, the governor said that divided government carries with it a mandate from the people to act with wisdom, to work together, to seek ways to reach honorable compromise. If both parties take this approach, then the public interest will be served. Both parties will gain, and the entire state will benefit.”

Guests who attended were given a white pine seedling to plant in Milliken’s honor.
