Recreational Marijuana Sales Begin in Michigan

Marijuana is now being sold to adults in Michigan for recreational purposes.

The first licensed distribution centers opened yesterday.

Arbors Wellness Center in Ann Arbor was chosen to make the first sale. Arbors was an existing medical marijuana supplier.

The first customer was 78-year-old John Sinclair, who became the center of a cause célèbre when he was sentenced to a 10-year prison term in 1969 for offering two joints to an undercover Detroit police officer. He served two years.

Michigan voters approved the use and possession of cannabis by adults for recreational purposes in November of 2018, with a provision that local communities could decide for themselves if they wish to allow marijuana businesses to operate within their borders.

It has taken more than a year for the state to work out rules, and begin issuing business licenses.
