Some COVID Restrictions Lifted

Some COVID-19 restrictions will be relaxed in Michigan beginning Monday, but the ban on inside restaurant service will continue.

This afternoon, Governor Gretchen Whitmer said that progress in bringing infection rates down across the state warrants the resumption of some activities – but only those in which masks can be worn.

High schools can choose to return to face-to-face instruction, although school districts in the Copper Country begin their Christmas vacations on Monday.

Some low-contact high school extracurricular activities will be allowed to resume. Most sports will not, although a pilot COVID-19 testing program could help fall sports teams complete their unfinished tournaments.

Movie theaters, bowling alleys and other entertainment and recreation venues can reopen, with occupancy limits, and separation between family groups. No concessions will be allowed.

Colleges are being asked not to bring students back to campuses until mid-January.

Whitmer said the order will be reviewed after the holidays. If numbers continue to drop, more restrictions could be lifted, including the potential of restaurant in-house dining.
