Whitmer Asked Out of Veepstakes

It appears that Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer asked to be dropped from consideration for vice president weeks ago.

The Associated Press is quoting a high-ranking Democratic Party official as saying that Whitmer sent a message to presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden late in the spring, requesting to be removed, and recommending that he select a Black woman.

It was Biden who asked her to remain in consideration through the final vetting, which led to a meeting between the two last week.

Biden selected Senator Kamala Harris of California to be his running mate yesterday.

Whitmer will speak Monday at the online Democratic National Convention.
