Wind Blows U of M Basketball Team’s Plane Off Runway

Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti was closed for some time after a plane carrying the University of Michigan basketball team, its coach and the band slid off the runway.

A wind gust pushed the plane back down as it tried to depart to Washington D.C.

A tweet from the U of M team says takeoff was aborted, and after some strong braking, the plane slid off the runway and went through a fence.

Although the MD-83 suffered some damage to its nose gear, none of the 116 passengers and crew members were injured and they were all evacuated safely.

The FAA is investigating the incident.
