Study Focuses On Feral Swine

A new effort is being launched to look into how to rid Michigan of the destructive feral swine.
The state has awarded half-million dollar grant to researchers at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan-Flint, who will team up on the project.
The Gongwer News Service reports that officials plan to put tracking collars on up to 18 swine, to watch where they travel daily and seasonally over the next five years.
State officials say feral swine has been a growing problem. There were none thirty years ago in the state. Now there’s well over 300. Officials worry that they’re a threat because they can host parasites and diseases that threaten people and animals. And they also damage forests and farmland.
