Democrats have introduced legislation in both the House and Senate to exempt those collecting unemployment benefits in Michigan from the state income tax. State Senator Jim Ananich of Flint says the legislation will not only help families survive as they’re looking for work, but putting more money in their pockets will also pump dollars back into local economies. Similar legislation was introduced by Democrats in 2011, but never saw a committee hearing or a vote in either chamber which are controlled by Republicans.
