Teachers Learn About Mining at MTU

Nine teachers from across Michigan will spend five days at Michigan Tech next week, learning about the geology and natural resources of the Upper Peninsula, as well as engineering and societal issues related to mining. During the workshop participants will take field trips to explore the geology of the western Upper Peninsula, visiting both historic and active mines. They will explore rock identification, geologic history and time scales, plate tectonics, geologic control of mineral resources, mining engineering and the environmental impacts of different mining techniques. The institute is supported in part by the Michigan Space Grant Consortium.
