Tech Hockey Falls in OT – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In girls high school basketball yesterday, Calumet defeated Ewen-Trout Creek 46-32. Elli Djerf paced the Copper Kings with 10 points. The Panthers’ Elise Besonen led all scorers with 15.

In boys hoops, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City shaded Ontonagon 47-44 in overtime.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University men’s hockey team dropped an 8-1 decision to fifth-ranked Saint Norbert College last night. Teddy Randell scored the Lions’ only goal.

The Lions will face Saint Norbert again next weekend in the opening round of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs. Faceoffs will be Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 in De Pere. Pregame coverage for each game will begin at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

The Lions women’s hockey squad gave up four goals in the first period, and fell to Concordia-Wisconsin 7-0 yesterday.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team defeated Great Lakes Christian College 71-61 yesterday afternoon. The Lions took control early by outscoring the Crusaders 24-8 in the first quarter. Katie Lundeen led the FinnU attack with 24 points.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team dropped a tight 69-64 contest to Gogebic Community College yesterday afternoon. Jamal DeShields-Beard scored 26 for the Lions. Former Ontonagon standout Mitchell Borseth had 15 for the Samsons.

MTU/NMU

The Michigan Tech hockey team couldn’t hold an early lead, and dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to sixth-ranked Minnesota State in the finale of the annual Winter Carnival series last night. Dylan Steman and Justin Misiak each scored power play goals in the second period to but the Huskies up 2-0, but the Mavericks scored two unanswered goals to force overtime, and won it in the extra frame. MSU claimed the total-points MacInnes Cup 5-3.

The Northern Michigan hockey squad defeated Alabama-Huntsville 6-3 last night.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team won its sixth straight game yesterday, defeating Saginaw Valley State University 79-54. Abbie Botz had 22 points and 17 rebounds for the Huskies. Ellie Mackay added 17 points.

The Tech men’s team fell behind early, and lost to SVSU 75-54. Owen White scored 14 points for the Huskies.

Both Northern Michigan University teams defeated Northwood University yesterday – the women 54-43, and the men 72-60.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost 3-1 to the Buffalo Sabres yesterday afternoon. Dylan Larkin scored Detroit’s only goal. Jimmy Howard made 18 saves. The Wings skate at Chicago this afternoon. Pregame coverage will start at 2:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Washington Wizards on Monday. Pregame coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Pistons have signed free-agent guard Wayne Ellington. Ellington had been waived by the Phoenix Suns after they acquired him in a trade with the Miami Heat. He’ll fill the gap left by Detroit’s trade of Reggie Bullock. To make room on their roster, Detroit waived forward Henry Ellenson.
