UPPCO Warns Residents About Scam

UPPCO is warning U.P. residents to beware of scammers who may be calling customers, pretending to be company representatives or contractors. UPPCO says the scammers are threatening to disconnect service unless some kind of purchase is made and a follow-up phone call is then made to verify the transaction. Anyone who is actually behind on an UPPCO account would receive a notice in the mail. The company is asking customers to not provide any personal information to anyone over the phone, especially banking information. UPPCO also recommends writing down any information the caller provides, as well as the date, the time of the call and any information that shows up on caller ID. Anyone with a question about a suspicious call can contact UPPCO’s 24-hour customer service number. UPPCO can verify if the company made a phone call or not and can also verify the status of an account.
