Urologist Stephen Lipson Joins UP Health System – Portage

Lipson, Dr. Stephen UrologistHANCOCK, Mich. – UP Health System – Portage CEO Jeff Lang has announced that Dr. Stephen Lipson, a board certified urologist, is now seeing patients at Portage.

“Dr. Lipson’s joining the UP Health System – Portage Medical Staff is great news for Copper Country residents,” Lang said. “We are continuing to strengthen specialty clinic services and Dr. Lipson’s moving to the Copper Country and joining our team is another example of how UPHS – Portage is working to make our communities healthier. Dr. Lipson will be a strong addition to our Medical Staff and to our community.”

A native of coastal Massachusetts, Dr. Lipson completed his undergraduate degree at Princeton University in New Jersey and then earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Ohio. He trained in General Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and then completed a Fellowship in Cancer Surgery and Cancer Research at the Surgery Branch of the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He received additional general surgical training with the 5th Harvard Surgical Service in Boston.

Dr. Lipson trained in Urology at the Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard Medical School, eventually becoming Chief Resident in Urology and then an Instructor in Surgery at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Lipson is a veteran, having retired from the United States Public Health Service as a Lt. Commander.

He and his wife Jean have 7 children. His hobbies include downhill skiing, sailing, motor boating, kayaking, and tennis. Dr. Lipson and his wife fell in love with the Upper Peninsula having visited Marquette several years ago. He is very excited about the opportunity to live and practice medicine in the beautiful Upper Peninsula.

He said, “As a UP Health System Urologist, my goal will be to provide excellent and up-to-date urologic care to our patients so that they do not have to travel for most Urologic problems. We want to get our patients back to a normal life with freedom from uncomfortable, restricting and sometimes life-threatening urologic conditions. My philosophy as a physician has always been to treat patients the way I would want my family treated and I believe that has been effective.”

Dr. Lipson sees patients for conditions and procedures, including:
Urinary disorders in men, women and children
Urinary tract infections
Kidney stones
Urologic cancers including prostate, kidney, testicular and bladder
Urinary incontinence (bladder control problems)
Male infertility
Erectile dysfunction (impotence)
Vasectomy
