Vacant Council Seat In Houghton Filled

There is no longer a vacant seat on the Houghton City Council.

The council voted in long time Houghton resident John Sullivan,

Sullivan fills the vacancy left by former Councilman Gernot Joachim and will serve the remainder of the term until the election next November.

The council also made a number of reappointments to various commissions and one new appointment.

In City Manager Eric Waara’s report, he stated the milder weather has allowed the public works department to work on projects that they otherwise would not be able to do this time of year.

Waara also said he has met with Eagle Waste as the city looks ahead to when their current contract with Waste Management expires at the end of June 2016.

Waara said recycling will be included in the request for bids in the spring.

Dave Olsson from Aspirus introduced Dr. Vaitkevicius, their new cardiologist at Aspirus Keweenaw.

The council also thanked the Houghton Beautification Committee for their efforts in planting flowers and improving the way the city looks.

Volunteers planted over 20 new gardens since the Spring.
