Work Zone Awareness Week

State transportation officials say compared to 2012, highway work zone crashes in 2013 were down 11 percent, injuries down nearly 6 percent, fatalities down 33 percent, but serious injuries were up 87 percent. The announcement came in conjunction with Work Zone Awareness Week. MDOT says serious work zone injuries went up from 57 in 2012 to 107 last year, although fatalities went down, from 15 in 2012 to 10 last year. During the same period, the number of overall crashes declined. State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle says drivers must pay complete attention to everything that is going on in a work zone in order to safely react to changing conditions.
