World War II Bomber Could Become the Official Aircraft of Michigan

A bill commemorating the pilots who flew a long-range bomber during World War II and the women who built it could be voted on soon in the Michigan Senate.

The measure would name the B-24 Liberator the official aircraft of Michigan.

It was built at a Ford plant at the Willow Run Airport east of Ann Arbor.

At the time, the plant was the largest in the world.

Workers there – many of them women – were building a plane every 55 minutes.

The measure recently cleared a Senate committee.

The Michigan Senate is due back in Lansing on Wednesday.
