Governor Rick Snyder delivered his State of the State Address Thursday, during which he proposed a pilot program to move low-performing schools to a year round academic calendar. House Democrat Andy Schor of Lansing is sponsoring the bill to create the pilot program. He says in many at-risk areas parents don’t have the ability to pay for camps or summer education programs, so when the kids return to school three months later, teachers are finding they have to re-teach. Schor says his bill would create a fund for those at-risk schools to upgrade their buildings, with things like air conditioning, to accommodate a year-round academic year.
