Obituary: Fabian “Paul” Maki

F. Paul Maki, 79, a resident of Mishicot, WI, and summer resident of Twin Lakes, passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at his home in Twin Lakes with his family by his side.

Paul was born in Baraga, MI, on August 31, 1943, to the late Fabian and Lempi (Ylitalo) Maki. He was raised in Baraga and graduated from Baraga High School with the class of 1961. During high school he participated in basketball, football, and track. Following high school, Paul attended Ferris State University for 1 year before enlisting with the National Guard where he served for 6 years while also working for VanStratten Welding Company. On August 21, 1971, Paul was united in marriage to the former JoAnn Krekel of Twin Lakes. The couple moved to Mishicot, WI where Paul completed, with honors, the Numerically Controlled Robotics program at Lakeshore Technical College.  Paul then worked for HMF as a metal fabricator for 30 years before retiring from Stoelting Manufacturing in 2008.

Paul enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, making wood, fixing almost anything that needed repair, watching sports, especially the Green Bay Packers. He also enjoyed the summer months spent at the cottage in Twin Lakes. Paul was a great father, husband, grandfather, and friend all who knew him.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother John,  his mother and father-in-law Ortha and Kurt Krekel, a sister-in-law Charlotte Krekel, and a nephew Kipp Cushman.

He is survived by his wife JoAnn, son Erick (Jennifer) and grandchildren Olivia and Quinn Maki. He is also survived by sisters Kristine Hietala, Katherine (John) Tepsa, and Mary Maki.

A celebration of Paul’s life will take place at 3pm Sunday, July 2, 2023, at the family cottage in Twin Lakes, located at 29810 Pike Lake Road, Toivola, MI 49965.
