Houghton

A Mass of Christian burial for George A. Fassbender, 97, a resident of Houghton who passed away January 24, 2018, at the Omega House in Houghton will be held 11 am Friday June 8, 2018, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton with Fr. John Martignon to officiate. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery of Marquette at a later date.

Friends may call on Friday May 8, 2018, from 10:00am to 10:45 am at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton.

Houghton

George A. Fassbender, 97, a resident of Houghton passed away Wednesday morning January 24, 2018, at the Omega House in Houghton following a short illness.

He was born on November 25, 1920, in Marquette, MI, a son of the late Louis and Louise (Doll) Fassbender. George was a graduate of Graveret High School in Marquette.

Mr. Fassbender was a veteran having served with the United States Army during World War II where he was a medic and assisted in the clean-up at Hiroshima, Japan after the bombing. He then returned to Marquette to help on the family Dairy Farm.

In 1940 he was united in marriage to Irene Morin. In 1953, the couple moved to Hancock to open and run a new branch of the family business Bancroft Dairy. Since 1954, he has made his home in Houghton.

Mr. Fassbender was a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton where he served as usher for many years and was a former member of the Hancock Elk’s club. George enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid deer hunter making it to deer camp for 70 years. He will be greatly missed by the 6:00am coffee crew at McDonald’s.

Preceding him in death were his wife Irene, his son, Donald George, his nephew/son: Jim Morin, his parents, his siblings: Louis Jr., Wallace, Ernest, Roy, Bernice, Elsie, Florence and Clara Marie.

Surviving are:

His daughter: Pamela (Don Sawaski) Fassbender of Houghton

His sisters: Irene Niemi of Marquette

Marilyn Niemi of Marquette

His Nephews/Sons former wife: Cindy Uitti of Pickney, MI

His grandchildren: Ben (Courtney) Morin and Megan (Chad) Zelinski

His great-grandchildren: Luke, Elle and Drew Morin

Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many good friends.

A memorial mass for George will be held 11am June 8, 2018, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette.
