Obituary: Hilma S. Sastamoinen

UPDATE: A graveside service for Hilma Sastamoinen will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, in the Mt. View Cemetery in South Range.

Visitation will take place on Monday, September 12, 2022, from 5-7 pm at the South Range Memorial Chapel Funeral & Cremation Service – Mt View Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be directed towards Dollar Bay Schools PO Box 371 Dollar Bay, MI 49922 in memory of Hilma.

Hilma S. Sastamoinen, 94, formerly of Dollar Bay, passed away June 4, 2022, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
She was born on May 5, 1928, in Chassell, Michigan, the daughter of the late Atri and Lillian (Suonpera) Ypparila. She attended area schools and graduated from Chassell High School.

On September 6, 1946, she married Mervin Sastamoinen in Chassell. The couple made their home in Dollar Bay from 1946 to 2016. Since Mervin’s illness and subsequent hospitalization in 2016, she has lived with her son Bob in Minneapolis.

Hilma served in the Dollar Bay VFW Post 6028 Auxiliary and was a member of the Order of Runeberg Lodge of Dollar Bay for over 50 years.

Hilma is survived by her two sons, Bob of Minneapolis, Gary (Joanne) of St. Petersburg, Florida; one daughter, Julie (Longin) Krol of Fairbanks, Alaska; eight grandchildren; three nephews and six nieces.
Hilma was preceded in death by her husband Mervin, parents Lillian and Atri Ypparila, and a brother Arnold (Dave) Ypparila.

A time of remembrance with the family will be held in the fall at the Memorial Chapel Funeral & Cremation Service – Mt. View Chapel of South Range followed by interment in the Mt. View Cemetery in South Range. Details will be published at a later date.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the Dollar Bay Tamarack City School, PO Box 371, Dollar Bay, MI 49922 in the name of Hilma Sastamoinen.
