Obituary: Joanne L. Marttila

Atlantic Mine

Joanne L. Marttila, 74, a resident of Atlantic Mine passed away Saturday, February 23, 2019.  

She was born April 8, 1944, in Hancock, daughter of Alfred and Flora (Ruonavaara) Hendrickson.  She graduated from Hancock High School with the class of 1962. She worked at Vollwerth’s for several years as a bookkeeper.  On May 6, 1967, she was united in marriage to Clarence Marttila. They were married 47 years until his death on December 23, 2014.  Joanne was a life-long member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church in Hancock.

Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, her daughter-in-law, Judy Marttila, and her brother-in-law, Ralph Ryti.  

She is survived by four sons, Paul (Brenda) of Atlantic Mine, Eric of Goodrich, Michigan, Evan (Dawn) of Battle Ground, Washington and Jonathan of Atlantic Mine; three daughters, Christine of Hancock, Debbie (Christer) Peltomaa of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania and Rachel (Jerry) Homola of Battle Ground, Washington; nine sisters, Irene Hendrickson, Cecile Hendrickson, and Gretchen (Randy) Mayra of Hancock, Luella Ryti of Dollar Bay, Kathy (Fritz) Kolb of Calumet, Lil Hendrickson, Tekla (Karl) Schmeusser and Sandy (Ron) Miller of Battle Ground, Washington, and Sharon (Gerry) Hammerstrom of Pasco, Washington; one brother, Joe Hendrickson of Hancock; one uncle, Sivert Hendrickson; one aunt, Anna Mae (Tom) Koski; 25 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services for Joanne will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2019, at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church of Hancock with Ronald Jouppe to officiate.

Spring burial will be in the Liminga Cemetery.

Friends may call on Thursday, February 28, 2019, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church of Hancock and on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
