Obituary: Joseph C. “Joe” LaBeau, Sr.

Joseph C. “Joe” LaBeau, Sr. age 69, of Detroit, MI and formerly of L’Anse, MI passed away Monday, November 23, 2020 at Seasons Hospice in Harper Hospital, Detroit, MI. He was born in Muskegon, MI on April 22, 1951 the son of the late Bernard and Bernice (Lyons) LaBeau. He joined the US Army and served during the Vietnam War. Joe was honorably discharged in 1971. He attended the police academy in Brigham City, Utah and had been employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and was a police officer for Keweenaw Bay Indian Community’s Tribal Police, retiring in 1999. He had also been a certified Ice Rescue Specialist with KBIC. Joe was a member of KBIC, the KBIC Veterans, and the VVA. He enjoyed working on cars, hunting, woodworking, making homemade beer, and being outdoors watching drag races, Monster Truck races and mud bogs.

Joe is survived by his loving children, Aaron (Dana) LaBeau of Cumming, GA, Anthony (Christina) LaBeau of Herman and Laura (Joel) Mayo of Baraga, 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, brothers Leon (Aldica) LaBeau of L’Anse, Christopher LaBeau of Maynard, MN, John LaBeau of Winsor Ontario and Mark LaBeau of Muskegon, MI, sisters Elizabeth Ann Hosie of L’Anse and Wanda Kaminski of Muskegon, MI. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Al and his son Joseph Jr.

A visitation for Joe will be held from 1 p.m until 3 p.m. on Monday, November 30, 2020 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse, MI.

Masks will be required and please remember to practice safe social distancing.

Graveside services and military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 4, 2021 in the Pinery Cemetery.
