Obituary: Joseph L. Picciano

Joseph L. Picciano Sr., 87, a resident of Calumet passed away unexpectedly on January 13, 2024.

He was born on February 4, 1936 in Laurium, son of the late Joseph and Ann (Rossio) Picciano.

Joe graduated from Calumet High School with the Class of 1953. He remained close to many of his classmates and helped organize several of their class reunions.

Following school Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army serving for 2 years, and served in the Michigan National Guard for an additional 5 years.

On December 9, 1961 he was united in marriage to Joanne Kestner.

Joe was employed as an Iron Worker for 35 years in Local 783, now Iron Workers Local 8. A trade he loved, Joe worked on multiple notable buildings throughout the Great Lakes Region.

In his retirement years, Joe was employed at Pats IGA in Calumet where he made many friends, and enjoyed interacting with customers and his fellow employees.

Joe, with his wife Joanne, ran the CLK Council of Church’s Food Pantry for 13 years–a job he enjoyed. He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Church and was an usher for many years.

He was passionate about exercising–whether it was lifting weights, Karate, Judo or shoveling snow. He also loved grilling, smoking meats, pit-barbecuing with his close friend Frank

 Crnkovich, and flying multiple kites with Vicki Crnkovich. Joe cherished the time he spent with his family and friends over the years.

He was preceded in death by:

His Father, Joseph Picciano (K.I.A .WWII) Mother-in-law Anna Kestner

Surviving are: His wife, Joanne; Sons, Joe (Annette) Picciano, Jr. of Portland, OR and Jon (Cari) Picciano of Philadelphia, PA.

His “Number #3 Son”, JB White of Swartz Creek, MI.

Very close family friends: Bill Limback Family, Frank Crnkovich Family and Special Grandchild Dorothy (Alex) Loukus & Paisley.

A memorial mass will be held Thursday January 18, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Calumet.

Visitation will be at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of services on Thursday.
