Obituary: Laura E. Erickson

Laura E. Erickson, 91, of Atlantic Mine, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Friday, March 19, 2021, at UP Health System-Portage following a short illness.

She was born in Seager, Michigan, on December 17, 1929, a daughter of Emil and Helmi (Soine) Heinonen, and was a graduate of the Painesdale High School.

She worked briefly as a receptionist for Dr. Kerridge, DDS, and as a cashier at the South Range Cooperative Store before she was married.

On September 30, 1950, she married Peter Erickson and became a full time homemaker and mother.

Laura was a lifetime member of the Copper Range Historical Society of South Range. She loved to travel with her husband in their RV camper, traveling to all 49 states except Hawaii, and also traveled most of the Canadian Providences. They would end their trips in Branson, Missouri.

Laura was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Peter, of 56 years of marriage; a sister, Norma Waisanen; and two daughters, Donna and Karen.

Surviving are her daughter, Kathy Maki (Ron Stevens) of Lake Linden; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to thank the staff at UP Health System and Portage Hospice for their compassion and care given to Laura.

At Laura’s request, there will be no public visitation. A private funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range, with Vicar Micah Cavaleri to officiate. Burial will be in the Atlantic Mine Cemetery.
