Obituary: Martin C. Schwamberger

Martin C. Schwamberger, age 82, a resident of calumet, passed away on Friday, May 27, 2022.

He was born on August 22, 1939, in Aurora, Illinois, son of the late Martin and Marie Schwamberger. He was raised in the Aurora area and was a graduate of Marmion Military Academy, a Catholic High School for boys in Aurora. 

After high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve and was sent to Paris Island South Carolina.

He worked for Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad Company for over 38 years, retiring in 1995 as a manager- Casualty Management. 

Shortly before retirement, he visited the U.P. and loved the Houghton County area. He purchased land and built a home with his beloved life partner Shirley. He was very outgoing and made many friends. His interest included HAM radio and model trains. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Catherine.

Surviving him are Shirley Peter, his loving companion of over 28 years, step son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Maggie Bjur and cherished grandchildren, Amy, Jason and Nora Gruss, Lauren Bjur and Kyle Castronova.

Martin’s family would like to express thanks and gratitude for all the compassionate care and attention he received during his time at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium and to the nurses and therapist from Aspirus at Home for all the weekly visits to our home.  Your Kindness and Professionalism are beyond compare and we will never forget you. 

Marty will be interred at Clarendon Hills Cemetery in Darien, Illinois, privately per his wishes. 

The Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet, MI, will be assisting the family with arrangements.
