Obituary: Nicholas Lawrence “Nick” Faller

Nicholas Lawrence “Nick” Faller, 80, of Hancock, passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 at U.P. Health System-Portage Hospital.

Nick was born on May 16, 1943 in Hancock to the late Nicholas and Rebecca (McLean) Faller. He graduated from Hancock High School in 1962, graduated from Suomi College with an Associates Degree, and then earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science from Northern Michigan University. He worked in Leona, Wisconsin as a Library assistant, taught school in Copper Harbor for 2 years, and also was a 2nd grade teacher In Deerton, Michigan. He was the parts manager at Bruno’s Motors for 2 years and then began his career on the great lakes ships until his retirement as a Boson after 27 years. He sailed mainly on the Joseph L. Block and the Wilfred Sykes ore boats.

Nick was an avid reader and book collector. He was a world traveler and was able to visit every state in our country except Connecticut. He loved food of all sorts. He belonged to the United Steel Workers Organization of Active Retirees, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, the Gettysburg Foundation, and save the Hunley Organization.

Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by his half sister, Marlene Perkins. He is survived by his brother, Michael (Mary) Faller of Hancock, half brother James Faller of Wisconsin, and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a graveside service on the family lot at Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock in the spring. There will be no visitation. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Portage Lake District Library, 58 Huron Street, Houghton, MI 49931.
