Obituary: Norman E. Kromer

As received from Memorial Chapel Funeral and Cremation Service:

Norman Earl Kromer, 91, a resident of the Houghton Canal passed away Saturday, February 10, 2024, with family by his side.

He was born in Olivia, MN to Howard and Blanche (Kopacek) Kromer. Norm was an accomplished athlete and carpenter (like his father), receiving a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota.

Mr. Kromer began working for Peter Kiewit & Sons before moving to Denver, CO, where he began purchasing and selling real estate. It was during that time he met his future wife, Nancy Johnson (from Hancock, MI). They married on July 3, 1965, and had two sons. Working as an insurance agent for American Family Insurance to retirement, Norm also developed and grew both a roofing and landscaping business.

As the couple’s family grew up in Colorado they enjoyed returning to the Copper Country, spending time on the water, developing a lifelong love for boating, windsurfing, and skiing on both water and snow. Golf was also a favorite sport Norm enjoyed watching and playing.

Vacations home to the Copper Country throughout the years led Norm and Nancy in retirement to purchase family property on the Houghton Canal. They then enjoyed winters in Hot Springs Village, AR, and summers in the Keweenaw. For the past year and a half, the couple resided year-round on the Houghton Canal.

Norm was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Edith.

Surviving are:

His beloved wife of 58 years: Nancy Kromer

His sons: Nelson Kromer of Denver, CO, and Neil (Stephanie Hoskins) Kromer of Houghton.

His grandchildren: Elle and Levi

His sister: Phillis Kromer of Minneapolis, MN

His cousin: Susan Gens of Saint Paul, MN

A Memorial service for Norman will be held later this June (TBD) with burial in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock. To view Norman’s obituary or to send condolences to the family please visit www.memorialchapel.net
