Obituary: Richard A. Hallstrom

As received from Memorial Chapel Funeral and Cremation Service:

Richard A. (Dick) Hallstrom, 86, a resident of Dollar Bay, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2024, at UP Health Systems – Portage Hospital.

Dick, as everyone knew him by, was born on January 17, 1937, in Chatham, MI, to George and Annie Hallstrom.  He attended school in Eben, MI, and fostered an early appreciation for the woods and logging, working alongside his father while growing up.

Dick was a member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church.  He married Alice Juvonen on August 23, 1958, in Detroit, MI.  They soon moved to Utica, NY where he graduated from flight mechanic school.  He loved anything to do with airplanes and worked for Mohawk Airlines as a mechanic for several years.

Dick and Alice moved their family to Kalispell, MT, where he worked road construction and later owned and operated a logging company.  This occupation also brought them to Woodland, WA, and finally to Dollar Bay, MI, in 2003, where he worked together with his sons.  This is something that brought him a lot of joy, and it’s safe to say that he never really retired.  He always said that nothing smelled better to him than the woods.

Preceding him in death are his wife Alice on July 3, 2022, grandson Cade Hallstrom, sister Jeanne Wiitanen and brother Willard Hallstrom.

Surviving are: his three children, Sondra (Kory) Habets of Conrad, MT, Dan (Leslie) Hallstrom of Kalispell, MT, Sam (Tracy) Hallstrom of Hancock, MI, his brother Kenneth Hallstrom and sisters Violet (Allen) Makinen, and Mary Jane (Bud) Whitmarsh all of Chatham, MI and sister Helen Uskoski of Battle Ground, WA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren loved Papa, as they all call him dearly.  Tiffany, Jana, Desirae, Whitney, Tanner, Madison, Macy, MaKenna, Samuel, Boden, Finn, Ashton, Mariah, Devin, Jacob, and Julia all have many, many precious memories with him, as Dick and Alice traveled back and forth across the United States to visit them as often as they could.

A funeral service for Dick will be held 11:00 am Saturday, January 13, 2024, at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church of Hancock with Ronald Jouppe officiating.  Spring burial will be held in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham, MI.

Friends may call on Saturday January 13, 2024, from 9:00 am until time of services at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church of Hancock
