Obituary: Robert J. Thompson

Robert J. “Bob” Thompson, age 83 of Sidnaw, MI passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at Bayside Village, L’Anse. He was born in Trout Creek, MI on April 23, 1940 the son of the late Helmar “Pat” and Marion (Bennett) Thompson. Bob graduated from L’Anse High School in 1958. Following graduation, he joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country until 1969 and had also served 10 years in the Michigan National Guard. He married the former Joan Mauro in Inglewood, CA in 1960. They moved to Sidnaw in 1969. Bob was hired at Midway Telephone Company as a lineman and retired at age 60 as the General Manager. Bob was a member of Duncan Township Fire Department and the 494 Supporters (American Legion). He enjoyed hunting, fishing and cutting fire wood.

Bob is survived by his loving wife Joan of 63 years, daughters Lori (Greg) Jenss of Green Bay, WI, and Sheri Thompson of Chassell, son Kris (Jen) Thompson of Medina, OH, grandchildren Steve Turpeinen (Kendra), Austin Jenss, and Dominic (Kara) Thompson, great grandchildren Bennett, Aiyana and Kaia, 8 step grandchildren, sister Dorothy Beck, and brother Tom (Bev) Thompson. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Carol (Bob) Golden, brother Howard Thompson, and brother-in-law Don Beck.

Funeral services for Bob will be held at 12 p.m., Saturday, March 16, 2024 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Pastor John Henry officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service. Immediately following the funeral service, the family invites friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon in the Harrington Gathering Room, located at the funeral home.

Spring interment and military honors will be held in the Sidnaw Cemetery.

Bob will be sadly missed by many as he was very involved in his community and was a true Yooper!
