Obituary: Robert R. “Bob” Massie

Robert R. “Bob” Massie, age 72, of Baraga, MI passed away Monday, December 31, 2018 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, L’Anse, MI surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Hancock, MI on August 4, 1946 the son of the late Raphael and Frances (Hilgers) Massie. Bob graduated from Baraga High School in 1966. He proudly served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam Era. Bob married the former Cheryl “Sherry” St George at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, L’Anse on May 16, 1970. She preceded him in death on October 13, 2015. On June 17, 1983 Bob and his brother Peter purchased Massie Manufacturing. Bob retired in 2001. He was a member of St Ann’s Catholic Church, Baraga and the Baraga American Legion Post #444. Bob enjoyed going to the Baraga American Legion to visit with his friends who he thought of as family, going for rides, going out to breakfast, watching westerns and hunting and fishing with his buddies. Bob loved spending time with his grandchildren and “grand dog” Mack’.

Bob is survived by his loving daughters Kristine (Bill) Kunick of Baraga and Denise Massie of Baraga, grandchildren Kayla (Dave), Derek and Ella, great grandchild Emma, brothers David (Sue) Massie of Baraga, John (Cindy) Massie of Keweenaw Bay, Mark (Linda) Massie of Baraga, Peter (Becky) Massie of Arnheim, Dennis Massie of Keweenaw Bay, Dale (Lorraine) Massie of Baraga and Tom Massie of Keweenaw Bay, sisters Mary (Doug) Tervo of L’Anse, Susan Timm of Baraga and Kathleen Koski of Baraga, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Bill St George, Debbie (Jim) Bennett, Fred (Bev) St George, Brenda (Roger) Turunen and Michelle (Steve) Synkelma. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, sister Patricia Kimball and mother-in-law and father-in-law, William and Dorothy St George.

Funeral services for Bob will be held at 11 am Friday, January 4, 2019 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Deacon John Cadeau officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral chapel on Friday from 10 am until the time of the funeral service. Immediately following the funeral service, the family invites friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon at the Baraga American Legion Post #444.

Spring interment and graveside military honors will take place in the Baraga Cemetery.

The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse, MI has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
