Obituary: Ruth Ann Niemi

Ruth Ann Niemi, age 86 of L’Anse, MI passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

She was daughter of George and Bertha (Fleury) Reed, born on December 29, 1933 in L’Anse at her family home where she still resided. Ruth attended school in L’Anse. She married Elwood Niemi on June 23, 1951 in L’Anse. Ruth worked at the Baraga County Sheriff’s Department as a matron. She also worked at the Night Owl, bartender at the VFW, and was a caterer. Ruth made the best rye bread and enjoyed baking and making wedding cakes. Ruth was a member of L’Anse United Methodist Church, VFW Auxiliary, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving are her children, Mary Niemi, Linda (Ben) Dorsky, Elwood (Cindy) Niemi, Sandra (Chad) Rice all of L’Anse; 20 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; 3 special nieces, Cindy McDonald, Barbara Nankervis, and Sharon Niemi.

Preceding her in death are her parents George and Bertha; husband Elwood Niemi; brother Melvin Reed and sister Mildred Ollila.

Visitation will be on Saturday, February 22nd from 11-1:00 p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Nate Reed officiating. A luncheon will follow at the L’Anse United Methodist Church Hall. Burial will be in the spring in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery.
