Obituary: Ruth Frankovich

As received from the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home:

Ruth Joann Fraki Frankovich, 86, of Houghton, passed away at home, surrounded by family on February 1, 2022, after a brief battle with cancer.

Ruth was born on April 19, 1935, in Hancock, the daughter of Martha and Ben Fraki.

She attended the local schools of the area and was a graduate of Calumet High School, Class of 1952. After graduation she lived briefly in New York City and then attended Suomi College. Ruth moved to Detroit to work as an executive assistant in the auto industry.

She married Jim Frankovich in 1956 and they lived in Royal Oak, Michigan before returning to the Copper Country in 1976 to join the family business, Fraki Markets.

Ruth devoted herself to raising four children and then worked side by side with Jim for years, serving as the accountant for Fraki Markets. In 2001, Ruth and Jim became the sole owners of the Fraki Market in L’Anse, renaming it the L’Anse Main Street Market. After Jim’s death, Ruth ran the business alone until she retired in 2005.

Ruth and Jim celebrated 46 years of marriage before his death in 2002. For Ruth, family was everything. She found absolute joy in her grandchildren, Ben, Sam, Charlie and Graeme. For many years, you could find Ruth shivering at various ice rinks around the Copper Country and in Skaneateles, New York. Her boundless capacity for love made her the heart of her family. She spent her last years traveling to visit her children and grandchildren and sharing all the important moments in their lives.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, brother Jim and sisters Mary and Carol as well as her son, Steve.

She was the loving mother of four children
Steve Frankovich : Hancock, MI
Teresa Frankovich (Steve Pence) : Arcata, CA
Mary (Kevin) Raber : Houghton, MI

She will be deeply missed by all who loved her.
