Obituary: Violette Marie Richards

Violette Marie Richards, 80, of Hancock, passed away early on Tuesday morning, June 7, 2022 at U.P. Health System-Portage Hospital in Hancock.

She was born on November 30, 1941 in Detroit to the late Albert and Violette May (Barr) Richards. She moved to Painesdale at an early age, living there for 10 years before her family moved to Hancock in 1955. She was a 1960 graduate of Hancock High School.

During her lifetime, Vi was employed by J.C. Penny and Newberrys in Houghton, Janis Home Care, Team Care, the American Red Cross, and at Pat’s Foods in Hancock, retiring from there in November of 2004. She volunteered for Little Brothers~Friends of the Elderly and for Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (R.S.V.P.). She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Hancock.

Violette enjoyed baking, cooking, knitting, and crocheting and would often be seen with her yarn and knitting needles making something special for someone she knew.

She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by 2 sisters: Judy (Joe) Englehardt of Conway, Arkansas and Ruth (Marc) Robling of Novi, Michigan; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends including Phyllis (David) Adamson, Barbara (Norman) Kendall, and Karen Chapin.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at the O’Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock with Rev. Scott Lindenberg to officiate. Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.
