Obituary: Virginia A “Ginny Ann” Jermac

Virginia A “Ginny Ann” Jermac, age 71, of L’Anse, MI and formerly of Baraga, MI passed away Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, L’Anse, MI.

She was born in Baraga on July 25, 1947 the daughter of the late Richard and Sarah (Whetung) Shalifoe. Ginny Ann graduated from Baraga High School in 1965. She married Eugene Jermac and he preceded her in death. She attended college in Chicago and received her associate’s degree in Business Administration. Previously Ginny Ann had worked for Gar Hood as his legal secretary and had retired from New Day Treatment Center as a group counselor. She was a member of Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, a former KBIC council member and had been the 1st Tribal Court Clerk. She was also a member of the Ojibwa Senior Citizens Center. Ginny Ann enjoyed going to the casino, taking rides, sewing, quilting and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was her communities advocate and loved helping people.

Ginny Ann is survived by her loving family; sons Craig (Angelique) Jermac of Rochester, MN and Aaron White of Watersmeet, grandchildren Desiree, Vanessa, Kenyan, Jayce, Sarah and Aariana, great grandchildren Brighton, Jackson and Savannah, brothers Richard (Gloria) Shalifoe of Zeba, Fred (Peggy) Shelifoe of Baraga, Ted Shalifoe of Baraga, Mathew (Nancy) Shalifoe of Baraga and Donald Shalifoe of Baraga, sisters Janice Shalifoe of Baraga, Molly (Chuck) Loonsfoot of Baraga and Myrtle Miller of Peshawbestown and sister-in-law Joanne Shelafoe. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by her daughter Sarah Beaver and brother Danny Shelafoe.

Traditional native funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, February 18, 2019 at the Zeba Hall. Visitation at the Zeba Hall will begin on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at 3 p.m. and continue until Monday at 1 pm. followed by a native feast. Spring interment will take place in the Assinins Cemetery.

The family has entrusted the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with the funeral arrangements.
