Obituary: Virginia Eileen Erkkila

Virginia “Ginny” Eileen (Anderson) Erkkila, 80, of Calumet passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday April 23, 2024.

Ginny was born on November 1, 1943 to Abram and Aili Anderson. She grew up working hard and creating many memories with her siblings on the family farm in Woodland. She attended Calumet Public Schools and graduated in 1962 from Calumet High School as valedictorian of her class. She then attended Michigan Tech for two years. On July 25, 1964, Ginny was united in marriage to Robert Erkkila. She stayed home to nurture and raise her ten children before returning to school, graduating from Soumi College at the top of her class. She was an excellent nurse and caregiver. Ginny truly loved her position at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium until her retirement in 2014. She enjoyed spending time with her husband Bob, her children and grandchildren, and was always ready to serve them coffee and cake. 

Ginny is preceded in death by her husband, parents, step-mother Helen, brothers Clifford and Lawrence Anderson, step-sister Sharon Liebhart, sister-in-law Florence Anderson, brother-in-law John Keranen, infant grandson Colin Erkkila, infant great-grandchildren Mark David Erkkila, Isaiah Pietila, and Faida Erkkila. 

She is survived by her sisters: Priscilla Keranen, Kathy (George) Keranen, Phyllis (Michael) Ramos, and Shirley (Dave) Josephson

Sisters-in-law Ruth (Gary) Albig and Joanne Anderson

Children:

40 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren 

Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins 

Ginny was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Calumet where services will be held at 12 o’clock on Friday April 26, 2024, with visitation from 10am until time of service. 

The Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
