Morning Sports for Monday, May 5th:

MLB: Tigers Sweep Royals
Justin Verlander carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning yesterday, as the Tigers completed a sweep of their series against the Royals with a 9-4 victory. Billy Butler’s single broke up no-hit bid… and K-C spoiled the shutout with three runs against Verlander in the seventh. By that time, Detroit had the game well in hand… thanks to home runs by Nick Castellanos and Alex Avila… and a two-run double by Miguel Cabrera. The Tigers open an interleague home series against the Astros tonight. Max Scherzer will face Jarred Cosart. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.

The weekend sweep dropped the Royals into third place in the American League Central. Detroit leads the division by 5-1/2 games over the White Sox.

Brewers Fall in 10th
The Brewers carried a one-run lead into the eighth inning… but Cincinnati tied the game with a run off Brandon Kintzler… then won the game 4-3 when Todd Frazier doubled home Chris Helsey off Tyler Thornburg in the 10th. The Brewers host the Diamondbacks tonight. Matt Garza will start against Mike Bolsinger.

Finlandia Baseball Swept at Northland
The Finlandia baseball team finished its season with a pair of losses at Northland College Saturday. The Lions were shut out 7-0 in the first game. Joe Richard had three of Finlandia’s seven hits. Richard collected another hit and an rbi in the second game, which the Lions lost 7-3. Finlandia closes its season with a record of three wins and 27 losses.

MTU Track Teams Set Marks at GLIAC Championship
The Michigan Tech track and field teams wrapped up their seasons at the GLIAC championship tournament in Ohio over the weekend. The men’s team finished ninth… the women’s team placed 15th. Five new school records were set during the competition. Jani Lane broke the record in the 1500. He finished second overall. Kyle Peterman broke his own discus record. Deedra Irwin set a new mark in the 800. Ashley Veale established a new standard in the 400 hurdles. Veale, Irwin, Lauren Raiford and Jamie Dompier broke the old record in the 4×400 relay.
