In Copper Country Twilight League baseball tonight…

High School

Local schools continue to begin preparations for the fall sports season.

Lake Linden-Hubbell football equipment handout is Sunday at 12:00 in the high school gym. Practice begins Monday at 4:00 for all athletes in grades 9-12 on the practice field.

The first volleyball practice will be Monday at 1:00 for all girls grades 9-12 in the high school gym.

The high school football season opens three weeks from tonight, when Lake Linden-Hubbell visits the Gogebic Miners. Keweenaw Report Sports will broadcast all of the Lakes’ games this season, as part of our expanded commitment to high school sports. Hear all of Calumet’s games on the voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3; and all of Houghton’s contests on the voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.

College Football

The Finlandia University football team has added a new player. Javon Bickham is a running back from Franklinton, Louisiana. Hear selected Finlandia football games this fall on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons have locked up point guard Saben Lee with a three-year contract. He was a restricted free agent.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost to the Boston Red Sox 4-1 last night. All of Boston’s scoring came on three home runs off Casey Mize, who gave up seven hits over five innings, and took the loss. Jonathan Schoop’s homer in the seventh was one of just five hits for Detroit. 18 Bengals batters struck out.

The Tigers conclude that set against the Red Sox this afternoon. Tarik Skubal will start against Martín Pérez. Coverage will begin at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Rowdy Tellez’ pinch-hit three-run homer in the seventh inning lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday. Freddy Peralta gave up two runs over six innings, but it was Brent Suter who earned his 10th win of the season in relief.

The Brewers have today off, and begin a home series against the San Francisco Giants tomorrow night.

Milwaukee’s COVID-19 struggles continue. Starting pitcher Eric Lauer has tested positive, and will miss at least 10 days. Sal Romano has been called up from Nashville to fill in. Lauer joins six other Brewers on the COVID list.

John Axford’s season is done. The 38-year-old veteran’s comeback derailed Monday when he suffered an elbow injury in his first major league game since 2018. The damage is said to be “significant.”

NFL

The National Football League exhibition season kicks off tonight with the Hall of Fame Game. The Dallas Cowboys will play the Pittsburgh Steelers in Canton, Ohio at 8:00. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
