Sharp, Mayer Take Pequaming Wins – Sunday Sports Wrap

Morning Sports for Sunday, June 8th:

MLB: Tigers Hold Off Red Sox
The Tigers took an early lead… then held off the Red Sox 8-6 on Saturday. Max Scherzer retired 12 of the first 14 batters he faced. Then, he unraveled, and wound up allowing four runs on 11 hits before leaving with two out in the seventh. Joe Nathan’s struggles continued, as he gave up two runs in the ninth. Eugenio Suarez hit his first major-league homer for Detroit. Nick Castellanos also hit one out.

The Tigers look to sweep the Red Sox tonight. Anibal Sanchez will face John Lackey. Hear the first pitch at 8:07 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Brewers Pound Pirates
A day after being bombed by the Pirates, the Brewers returned the favor Saturday, beating the Bucs 9-3. Milwaukee broke the game open with four runs in the eighth… highlighted by a two-run double from Ryan Braun. The Pirates committed five errors in the game. Matt Garza pitched six innings to earn the win.

The Brewers wrap up that series at Pittsburgh this afternoon. Yovani Gallardo will start against Jeff Locke.

A day after struggling against the Pirates, reliever Tyler Thornburg has landed on the disabled list with a sore right elbow. He’ll be examined by team physicians this week. Mike Fiers has been brought up from Nashville to fill in.

The Brewers have made quick work of signing their top picks from last week’s amateur draft. Supplemental first-round pick Jacob Gatewood and second-round pick Monte Harrison have both agreed to contracts. Both are coming out of high school. Gatewood is a power-hitting shortstop. He gives up a scholarship at USC. Harrison is an outfielder. He foregoes a scholarship at Nebraska, where he had been recruited for both baseball and football. Negotiations continue with pitcher Kodi Medeiros, the Brewers’ first choice in the draft.

Baraga County Lake Trout Festival A Success
Despite some morning rain, the Baraga County Lake Trout Festival was a success on Saturday. 112 boats registered for the Keweenaw Bay Classic Fishing Tournament… producing a prize pool of more than $12,000. The Triple T team won the Salmon category, with a total catch of 22.6 pounds. Thunderbird took the Lake Trout category, with an impressive catch of 45.2 pounds.
