In high school baseball Saturday…
– Houghton blanked Bark River-Harris 6-0 in their first game at a tournament in Escanaba, then fell to the host Eskymos 6-2 in the championship contest.

In baseball today, Houghton entertains Marquette.

In high school softball today…
– Houghton plays at Calumet.
– Hancock entertains Baraga.
– L’Anse visits Lake Linden-Hubbell.

The Detroit Tigers used a late power surge to edge the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 yesterday. Trailing by a run with two outs in the eighth inning, J.D. Martinez and Miguel Cabrera hit back-to-back home runs to give the Tigers the lead. Francisco Rodriguez converted a rare save opportunity. Ian Kinsler also homered. All five of Baltimore’s runs were charged to starter Michael Fulmer, who left the game in the fifth inning.

The Tigers return home to open a three-game series against the Twins tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Jose Berrios. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Center fielder Cameron Maybin is expected to make his season debut with the Tigers tonight. Maybin has been on the disabled list since breaking his wrist during spring training. To make room, Detroit sent center fielder Anthony Gose down to Toledo.

Chris Carter’s RBI double in the seventh inning lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres yesterday. Carter broke out of a slump with three hits, including a homer. Jonathan Lucroy also hit one out for Milwaukee. Starter Zach Davies gave up two runs on three hits before leaving in the seventh inning.

The Brewers take today off, and open a series against the Cubs in Chicago tomorrow night. Chase Anderson will pitch against Kyle Hendricks.

NHL
The Blues got past the Sharks 2-1 in the opening game of the NHL Western Conference final last night. The Eastern Conference final between the Penguins and the Lightning continues tonight. Tampa Bay leads that series one game to none.

NBA
The Raptors defeated the Heat 116-89 in the seventh game of their second-round NBA series yesterday. Toronto will face Cleveland in the Eastern Conference final beginning tomorrow night. The Thunder and the Warriors open the Western Conference final tonight.
