Ontonagon Girls Take UP Track Title – Sunday Sport Wrap

Calumet Copper Kings LogoCarter Richardson’s single in the bottom of the eighth ended Calumet’s first run in the MHSAA baseball tournament as Negaunee defeated the Copper Kings 4-3 Saturday morning in Gladstone. Down by two after the first couple innings, Calumet scored all three of its runs in the sixth inning. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases and all three were plated on a sacrifice fly and two walks. The Miners then tied the score in the bottom of the inning on a passed ball after a opening single was advanced to third. Calumet had opportunities in the next two innings but couldn’t score.

Tourney favorite Gladstone advanced to the regionals with 15-0 five-inning win over Superior Central and a 13-1 win in the championship game over Negaunee.

In softball, Houghton held a 1-0 lead in the fifth over Westwood, but allowed eight in the sixth and fell in the semis 9-3. Gladstone again was the winner, with a 14-1 win over Iron Mountain and a 10-0 five inning shutout in the final against Westwood.

Ontonagon Gladiators O LogoOntonagon won the Division Three Upper Peninsula Track and Field team title Saturday at Kingsford. The Gladiators edged out Newberry and Munising for the crown. Lake Linden-Hubbell finished fourth, Chassell placed ninth, and Dollar Bay tied for 17th. Lori Wardynski led the Gladiators with wins in the 100-meter dash, 300-meter hurdles, and high jump. She placed third in the 100-meter hurdles. Paige Blake won the 400-meter run, and finished second in the 200-meter. Stephanie Harry from Lake Linden-Hubbell won the pole vault, and Laura Lyons captured the long jump, and was third in the 200-meter run.

In the boys Division Three meet, Lake Linden-Hubbell finished seventh, Ontonagon 14th, Dollar Bay 17th, and Chassell 21st. Lucas Klein of the Lakes placed second in the discus throw.

Hancock Athletics LogoThe Hancock girls came in second in the Division two girls meet. L’Anse finished 10th. Mary Jarvis of the Bulldogs won the 100-meter hurdles, the 300-meter hurdles, anchored the winning 4×200 relay team, and placed third in the 100-meter dash.  Ellie Lucier took second in the 200-meter run, and third in the 300-meter hurdles. Madysn Wright finished second in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs.

In the Division Two boys meet, Hancock placed fifth, and L’Anse eighth. Alex Dewald of the Bulldogs won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes.  Gage Hawthorne took the discus throw. Foster Miller from the Purple Hornets placed second in the 110-meter hurdles, and was a member of the second-place 4×400 relay team.

In the Division One girls meet, Houghton came in sixth, and Calumet eighth. Kendra Monette of the Gremlins won the shot put, placed third in the 100-meter dash, and anchored the third-place 4×100 relay team. Rebecca Stone of the Gremlins came in second in the pole vault. Calumet’s Hailey Wickstrom finished second in the high jump.

Houghton-Gremlins-LogoHoughton finished second to Marquette in the Division One boys meet. Calumet finished 10th. Clayton Sayen won the 400-meter run, placed second in the 800-meter, and third in the 1600-meter. Casey Lentowich was second in the 110-meter hurdles. Brad Ohtonen won the discus throw, and came in second in the shot put. Tyler Ryynanen finished second in the pole vault.  The Gremlins’ 4×800 relay team came in first. Calumet’s Jesse Helminen placed second in the discus throw.

Mike Pelfrey finally won his first game as a Tiger, as Detroit defeated the Chicago White Sox 7-4 Saturday. Pelfrey gave up just two runs over six innings. He trailed 2-1 when he left the game, but J.D. Martinez’ two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth put him a position to be the winning pitcher. The Tigers added one in the seventh, and three in the eighth, then held on as the Sox scored two off reliever Mark Lowe in the ninth.

Shane Greene pitched a scoreless seventh inning in his return from more than a month on the disabled list. Manager Brad Ausmus says he’ll continue to use Greene out of the bullpen for the time being. Matt Boyd will remain in teh starting rotation.

The Tigers host the Sox again this afternoon. Justin Verlander will start against Chicago White Sox. Hear the first pitch at 1:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers overcame an early deficit, and defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 Saturday. All the Philadelphia runs came off Junior Guerra, who surrendered two home runs in the second inning. He settled in to complete six frames. By that time, the Brewers had tied the game. The took the lead in the eighth on Domingo Santana’s homer, then scored a couple of insurance runs in the ninth. Will Smith got the win in relief, and Jeremy Jeffress earned his 15th save.

The Brewers conclude that set at Philadelphia this afternoon. Wily Peralta will pitch against Aaron Nola.

NHL
The San Jose Sharks came from behind to edge the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 last night. The Penguins lead the Stanley Cup final two games to one. Game four will be played tomorrow night.

NBA
The Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers will continue the NBA championship series tonight. The Warriors lead the set one game to none.
