In high school hockey Friday…
– Houghton opened its season with an 8-2 loss to Hartland.
– Jeffers fell to Sault Ste. Marie 6-3 at the Soo Elks Showcase.

Today…
– Jeffers continues play at the Soo Elks Showcase against Big Rapids.
– Hancock welcomes Hartland.

The result of L’Anse’s game against the Soo Firehawks Friday night was not reported. The Purple Hornets will host the ‘Hawks again this afternoon.

In high school football…
– North Central powered its way to a second-straight eight-man high school football title Friday night, with a 58-22 victory over Deckerville.
– In Division Eight, St Ignace will face Muskegon Catholic Central in a semifinal game today at Petoskey.
– In Division Five, Menominee will take on Frankenmuth in a semifinal game today at the Superior Dome.

Alex Smith’s goal midway through the third period lifted the Michigan Tech hockey team to a 3-2 victory at Alaska-Anchorage Friday night. Smith’s goal came on a rebound from a shot by Matt Roy. It gave the Huskies their fourth win in a row, and moved them above the .500 mark for the season. Shane Hannah and Joel L’Esperance also scored for MTU. Tech skates at Anchorage again tonight.

The MTU women’s basketball team got off to a fast start, and buried Minnesota-Crookston 74-53 Friday night. Morgan Anderson hit a three-pointer five seconds into the game. The Huskies opened a 26-8 lead in the first quarter, and never trailed in the contest. Anderson and Elizabeth Kelliher led Tech with 15 points each. Hannah Stoll collected 11 rebounds. The Huskies host Concordia-St. Paul today at 4:00.

The Tech men’s basketball team’s second-half comeback fell short, as the Huskies lost to Southwest Minnesota State 73-69 Friday night. MTU trailed by 17 at halftime. They closed the gap to a single point late in the game, but MSU was able to hang on for the win. Freshman Tommy Lucca led the Huskies with 25 points.  Tech entertains Minnesota State Moorhead today at 6:00.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey squad lost 2-1 at Bemidji State Friday night. Those NMU Logo Headteams play in Minnesota again tonight.

The NMU women’s basketball team lost to Concordia-St. Paul 68-61 Friday night. The Wildcat will host Minnesota-Crookston today. The Wildcats’ men’s basketball team dropped a lopsided 104-68 decision to Minnesota State Moorhead Friday night. They will host Southwest Minnesota State today.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team lost 4-0 at Lawrence University Friday night. The Lions were outshot 33-16. They’ll play at Lawrence again today.

The Lions’ women’s hockey team dropped an 8-1 decision to Concordia-Wisconsin Friday night. Natasha Kern scored Finlandia’s only goal in the third period. The Lions head to Adrian for a match tomorrow.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team opened its season with a 90-49 loss at Calvin College in Grand Rapids Friday night. The game was even for the first six minutes, until Calvin opened up a big lead with a 17-2 run. Marcus Geralds led the Lions with 16 points. Finlandia will play at Alma College this afternoon.

The Finlandia women’s hoops team began its season by falling 93-47 to the host team at the Hope College tip-off tournament in Holland Friday night. The Lions put a scare into the 13th-ranked Dutchmen early in the game by reeling off 14 consecutive points to take a 27-10 lead. Hope regrouped, and allowed Finlandia just five points in the second quarter, and four in the third. Caitlin Hewitt led the Lions with 11 points. Finlandia will face Carroll College in the consolation game today.

The Detroit Red Wings suffered their third straight loss Friday night, a 1-0 shutout at Washington. Jay Beagle’s goal off Jimmy Howard in the third period was the game’s only score. The Wings host the Calgary Flames tomorrow night.

The Detroit Pistons were shut down 104-81 by the Cleveland Cavaliers Friday night. Detroit opened with two quick three-pointers to take a 6-0 lead, but the game got out of hand quickly after that. Jon Leuer led Detroit with 15 points. The Pistons return home to host the Boston Celtics tonight. Tipoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NFL
The Detroit Lions host the Jacksonville Jaguars in a 1:00 game on Sunday. Defensive end Ezekiel Ansah and running back Theo Riddick saw limited practice this week because of injuries, but could play. Linebacker Dendre Levy has also been working out with the team as he recovers from a knee injury, but is still listed as doubtful. Check the full injury report here.
