Reed Heathman Claims State Ski Title – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

Houghton Alpine skier Reed Heathman won a Division Two individual championship yesterday. At the state meet at Schuss Mountain, Heathman took first place in the men’s giant slalom, edging out runner-up Connor Truman from Harbor Springs by a third of a second. Eli Heathman finished 12th in the giant slalom. Eli logged a 14th place finish in the slalom, and Reed came in 34th. The Houghton girls finished fourth in the team competition. Blanca Pages Borrell and Ashley Lehmann placed eighth and ninth in the slalom. Borrell finished fourth in the giant slalom, and Lehmann came in 12th. See full results here.

On the first night of the girls basketball tournament…
• In Division Four District 98 quarterfinals…
  – Chassell edged Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 51-49. Trisha Pietila had15 points and eight rebounds for Chassell, and Kylee Sohlden had a double-double, with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Ashley Datto led the Blue Bolts with 20 points. The Panthers will play at Baraga tomorrow night at 6:00.
  – Lake Linden-Hubbell shaded Jeffers 42-40. Emily Jokela scored 22 for the Lakes, and Maddie Buschell added nine. Sara Johnson led the Jets with 20, and Taylor Heinonen scored 12 points. The Lakes will play at L’Anse tomorrow at 6:00.

 • In Division Four District 97 quarterfinals, with all games played at Ontonagon…
  – Ironwood eliminated Bessemer 52-28. The Red Devils will face Ontonagon tomorrow at 6:00.
  – Watersmeet bounced Wakefield-Marenisco 44-19. The Nimrods will meet Ewen-Trout Creek tomorrow at 7:30.

 • Division Three District 65 quarterfinals…
  – Ishpeming ousted Gwinn 66-35. The Hematites will host Hancock tomorrow at 6:00.
  – Calumet will host Westwood in tomorrow night’s other semifinal. Coverage will begin around 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

 • Division Two District 33 has only four teams. The semifinals will be played tomorrow…
  – Houghton will host Kingsford. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
  – Escanaba will play at Negaunee.

• Hancock dispatched Republic-Michigamme 61-34.

• Lake Linden-Hubbell will host Watersmeet at 6:00.

• Ewen-Trout Creek entertains Menominee.

In high school hockey, Alpena and Gaylord will decide their regional championship tonight. The winner will face Calumet in the quarterfinals Saturday in Marquette. Our coverage of Saturday’s quarterfinal game will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

College Softball

In Florida yesterday, the Finlandia softball team lost 22-1 to Eastern University, and 9-1 to Elizabethtown College. The Lions will play Cabrini University and Rosemont University today.

College Baseball

The Finlandia baseball team lost two to Northern Vermont-Lyndon yesterday, 13-8 and 6-4. Jacob Mead homered in the nightcap. The Lions have today and tomorrow off.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings host the Carolina Hurricanes tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Washington Wizards tonight.

MLB

Negotiators between Major League Baseball players and team owners have finally gotten serious about working out a new labor deal. The two sides met for 16 hours yesterday, in advance of the owners’ threat to begin canceling regular-season games if a new contract was not in place by the end of the day. It wasn’t, but negotiators agreed to extend that deadline to 5:00 today. Observers say the players union and the owners remain deeply divided on several crucial issues.
