MTU Hockey Hopes for NCAA Tourney Bid Tonight – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

The girls high school state basketball championships were decided Saturday at the Breslin Center in East Lansing…
• Fowler, which eliminated Baraga in the semifinals, defeated Plymouth Christian 61-46 to win the Division Four title.
• Ypsilanti Arbor Prep edged previously unbeaten Kent City 54-50 to claim the Division Three crown.
• The Detroit Edison Public School Academy downed 73-55 to take the Division Two championship.
• West Bloomfield stopped Hartland 51-42 to earn the Division One crown.

The boys tournament will continue with the state quarterfinals on Tuesday. Ewen-Trout Creek will face Rudyard at Munising High School at 7:00.

College Hockey

We’ll find out tonight the participants and pairings in the NCAA Division One hockey tournament. The selection show begins at 6:30 on ESPNU. The Michigan Tech team will hold a watch party at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena, to see if the Huskies will earn an at-large invitation. Doors will open at 5:30, and there is no charge.

NHL

The Seattle Kraken scored four times in the third period, and upended the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 Saturday night. Joe Veleno and Taro Hirose found the net for Detroit. Alex Nedeljkovic made 38 saves.

The Wings entertain the Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost 113-109 to the Cleveland Cavaliers Saturday evening.

The Pistons host the Portland Trail Blazers Monday. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3 in Grapefruit League baseball Saturday. Daz Cameron homered. Starter Casey Mize gave up a hit and struck out three over two shutout innings.

The Tigers will face the New York Yankees this afternoon. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers trounced the Texas Rangers 11-0. Pedro Severino and Weston Wilson homered. Luis Perdomo tossed two scoreless innings.

The Brewers will play the San Diego Padres this afternoon.

NFL

ESPN is reporting that former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams have agreed to a contract extension that will keep him with the team for the next five seasons. Stafford led the Rams to a Super Bowl victory in his first season on the west coast.
