College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team is headed to the NCAA tournament. The Huskies earned the 12th seed, and will face Minnesota-Duluth Thursday at 3:00 in Loveland, Colorado. The Bulldogs blanked Western Michigan University 3-0 Saturday to win the NCHC Tournament Championship. Fourth seed Denver will play 13th seed University of Massachusetts-Lowell in the second semifinal on Thursday. The winners will meet in the regional championship game Sunday.

High School

The Houghton High School softball team is holding an apparel sale. Support the team by purchasing items here. Orders must be placed by Friday.

The Detroit Red Wings entertain the Philadelphia Flyers tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings have sent defenseman Troy Stecher to the Los Angeles Kings, in exchange for a seventh round draft pick.

The Detroit Pistons host the Portland Trail Blazers tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Detroit Tigers scored four times in the top of the ninth inning, and edged the New York Yankees 8-7 in Grapefruit League play yesterday. Kody Clemens’ single drove in the game-winner. Robbie Grossman homered, and Tarik Skubal tossed two scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

The Tigers will face the Toronto Blue Jays this afternoon. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit will likely open the season without reliever Kyle Funkhauser. He’s sidelined with back problems.

The Milwaukee Brewers downed the San Diego Padres 6-3 in a Cactus League game yesterday. Jace Peterson, Keston Hiura and Mike Brosseau homered. Starter Freddy Peralta pitched into the third inning, allowing no runs on one hit.

The Brewers will play the San Francisco Giants tonight.

Youth Hockey

The Copper Country Junior Hockey Association is taking steps to open up more playing opportunities for girls. Two introductory sessions have been scheduled this week – tomorrow from 6:00 until 7:30, and Thursday from 6:00 until 7:30. Both will be held at the Houghton County Arena, and both are free to girls across the region. Current CCJHA girls players are encouraged to attend as well, to help introduce the sport to those who might be interested.
